Dale's Planes & Adventures
|
(June 2007) There's a new chapter unfolding in our family. Dale's been watching me "have all the fun" for quite a
number of years now and he's decided to try his hand at flying too.
Many years ago I bought a British-designed RC trainer (3-channel) that looked like it might be a good one. Designed
by the Cambria company, it was simply called the "Instructor", and that's what he's going to learn with. It has a
foam-core wing with mahogany veneer covering, non-steerable nosewheel and what I think is a rather low-mounted
horizontal stabilizer (under the fuselage) but it looks like a good trainer.
Of course, Dale's not one of your normal city-boy types - he's "country" through and through. Actually, I call him
my redneck son-in-law. Being the way he is, his plane's going to be "country" too. Actually, it's a flying re-creation
of the Dukes of Hazzard's General Lee - and it looks good. This weekend we're going to find out if it flies as good
as it looks.
(30 April 2008) Well, the General's done its job and Dale is turning into a pretty good (if rather fearless) flier. A
couple months ago he actually went and got another plane, the Tower Hobbies Nextstar and has progressed with it
to the point that a couple weeks ago the air brakes came off. Gotta tell you, with the brakes off she's not very far
behind my Sr. Falcon in performance - might actually be a tad faster.
Anyway, we're into mild aerobatics now and it's a whole lot of fun doing various maneuvers in formation. He's
learning fast and it's probably not going to be long before I can teach him no more - he'll be teaching me pretty
soon.
(4 September 2008) Incredible, how this guy's taken to flying, and how good he's gotten in just a year. Ever since
his first flight with the General he's been trying rolls and loops - has even gotten decent with inverted flight, which
is no easy thing with a 3-channel plane. Now, he's actually turned to teaching and working with a couple of the other
NEW fliers - and he's totally effective there too.
To say I'm impressed would be the understatement of the year.
