Here he is again with Susan, as we saddled him up for the day's activities.
There's no doubt that he's an "old hand" at this stuff. He's totally patient with getting the saddle on,
and then he's ready to "go do something". I actually got to take him for a short run (gallop) - first time
in over 30 years I've been on a horse "at speed". If he is smooth when he's walking or trotting, he's a
Cadillac at a run - rides more like a carousel horse than anything else. Fabulous!

Followup, 1 September 2003: Well, here we are with Maximus being a member of the family for 1.5
years. He's doing just fine, has spent much of the summer with us all so much has happened, I really
need to keep his pages up. Mainly, if anything, he's even better than he was a year ago. He's shown
us, many times, that he has a place in his heart for all kids (simply can't resist them) but we found that he has
a special fondness for our youngest granddaughter. Every time he sees her he comes right up and she
just HAS to ride up on "my Max", as she calls him (she's 3 as this is written). It's really wonderful to see
them together. Got a lot of pics around here, will get them loaded up ASAP.
13 September 2003: Max's first horse show with us!!!
We took our guy up to Elkton for the 20th annual Elkton Field Days Horse Show and entered him in 5
classes. He didn't win anything but we all had a ball just showing him off, and he did manage to get
several people's attention - one of which thought he was "cute". Max? Cute? hmmmmmm...... It was
rainy and yukky all day, cameras were soaked but they worked well anyway. Max was his usual self,
magnificent, if maybe a bit boisterous (which is highly unusual for him). He started the day by throwing a
shoe so our first bit of business was to find the farrier to fix him up. Actually, as I think about it,
maybe it was a good thing that he threw the shoe, as it helped settle him down as he stood for the
farrier. Before getting his shoe fixed, he was totally nervous and rather hard to work with. After the
farrier he was his normal energetic self. Pretty cool day!
